tool #11

I am not sure which I liked best, but in the class I will be using more videos to show students how to make more productive and engaging projects. I enjoyed learning different tools to use in the class and it will make a difference in my co-teach classes by giving students different options to show their understanding of the content taught. Looking in the class this year, much more technology is going to be used to teach and express knowledge which means teachers need to be more aware of technology and catch up.

I would let the kids know that they need to understand how ever they speak on the web should be the same way they would speak to their mothers, with respect. What is online does not really disappear and can be found. We have a student assembly where our counselors speak about cyberbullying. I like the teacher's Cool Cat blog about digital citizenship. It can be used in the class as well as BrainPop, but our parents can be educated by sending home information to them with the first day packets.

Technology is important to use in the class to bring other classrooms to our classroom. We worked with Skype and it would be cool to Skype again with other students in maybe Spain or France to discuss the Revolutionary War. We can always learn from others.

I liked the form that can be created in Google Docs to use as an accountability piece if in stations because as soon as the student signs in and completes the form, I receive an email to let me know they completed the form. Each students would need to know how to log in, but us teachers can help with that.

Thinkfinity gives the opportunity to explore different sites and two I found interesting are Civil War Letters on the ArtsEdge site and Life Before the Civil War on the Edsitement site. I like the Civil War Letters lesson because you are able to have students read and analyze letters written during a certain time period and have great discussions about what was read. The Life Before the Civil War lesson is also a good one to use and on the Edsitement site the lessons are already prepared for the teacher.

On This Day app and History: Maps of the World app seem more likely to be used in my US History class. It will be used as a reference tool and if at a station to make sure the student is accountable for their work, a worksheet or written assignment will be at the station and need to be completed to make sure the student did the work.

What I learned about the iPad is that there are different kinds of apps that can be downloaded for the students to use in the class or in stations. The Netbooks will be easier to use and students will be able to access different sites for the students to work with. Having co-teach classes mostly, it would be easy to manage the devices and give me and my partner more devices to utilize in the classroom. We could use them as a station or for projects.

The content objective for the lesson would be to have the students stay engaged by creating weekly this week in history videos like I embedded in a previous tool. It would be implemented at the beginning of the school year to get students use to working on the videos and posting them to an Edmodo page or a teacher made Facebook page students would like or join to see the videos. We could work together with the 6th and 7th grades social studies classes/teachers to share with one another.

We used Skype in the class this past year with students from England. It was a great experience for the students and teachers as well. TodaysMeet is cool to use when having discussions in class and the students can post questions and respond to the lesson.

WordSift was very interesting. It can help the students with vocabulary and there is even a visual thesaurus which makes a weblike visual of the most common words. You can also put in words for the thesaurus to web out. You do have to pay a fee for use of the visual thesaurus. It only let me play around for a few minutes. Here is the link.

Storybird is interesting in that students are able to create a book with artwork on the site. Students would be able to use information from class to create a book for kids or their peers.
